Charles Dexter Ward, a young man from a famous family, mysteriously disappeared from a mental hospital. Family doctor Willet tries to investigate the cause of Ward’s insanity and physiological changes. Willett learns that Ward has been trying to find the grave of his ancestor, Joseph Carven, for the past few years.

The edition includes two works by Arthur Conan Doyle (1859—1930). The Great Shadow—an adventure story set in an Anglo-Scottish border village at the end of the Napoleonic era, including a fascinating interpretation of the Battle of Waterloo, as well as The Disintegration Machine—which is a fantasy story from the Professor Challenger series.

In his thriller stories Poe tries to show psychic side of the crime from the inside. He is not interested in social roots of the crime, but in unmotivated actions that go beyond normal behavior of a person in the society.

Works by French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900–1944) are full of almost mystical echoes with the present days.
