Історико-політичний трактат «Державець» став найвідомішим творінням видатного італійського політичного діяча, мислителя, письменника Нікколо Мак'явеллі (1469–1527). У ньому автор розкрив закономірності суспільно-політичних явищ, максимально відверто виклав свої думки щодо методів здобуття й утримання влади. Мак'явеллі аналізує діяння Александра Македонського, Карла VII, Людовика XI, біблійного Давида та багатьох інших відомих правителів, виокремлює правильні стратегії й докладно зупиняється на помилках, пропонуючи рішення, які могли б усе виправити. Часи змінюються, а праця Мак’явеллі незмінно актуальна для посадовців усіх рівнів управління та владних інститутів.
Японський письменник, просвітник і дипломат Нітобе Інадзо (1862—1933) написав свій знаменитий трактат «Бусідо. Душа Японії» (1899) англійською мовою. Книга одразу стала бестселером. У ній автор виклав основні принципи традиційної японської моралі та етики. Крім Бусідо (кодексу честі самурая), він розглянув також інші вчення — конфуціанство, буддизм, синтоїзм — і моральні принципи, що передавалися протягом століть японськими самураями та мудрецями. У творі Нітобе порівняв самурайський етос із духом середньовічного лицарства й моральним ідеалом Стародавньої Греції.

When the Great Chicago Fire causes a stock market crash, he goes bankrupt, and his fraud is exposed. Frank has an affair with Aileen Butler, the daughter of one of his business partners. Aileen promises to wait for him after his imprisonment.
The Buccaneers (1937), Edith Wharton’s last novel, was left unfinished.

The novel by American writer John Kendrick Bangs (1862–1922) Alice in Blunderland: An Iridescent Dream is a political parody of Lewis Carroll’s two Alice books (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass). Alice travels to Blunderland, where everything is communal; children live in the Town Hall, with the Duchess and the town being their parents. The book features familiar characters made famous by Alice in Wonderland, including the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, among others.
